I love the 4th

4th of July at "the lake" is an amazing time, no wonder my parents plan their summers around it. We've always known about the shananagins that go on here but it has only been since my parents built a house on the lake that my grandfather went to as a boy that we've truly known the full extent of the celebrations. I guess the main difference is that PA doesn't have firework laws, scary for those who set then off, but SO much fun for the rest of the spectators. Around the lake 4 or 5 families must spend several hundred dollars each to get their stockpile for the evening. An unwritten system of taking turns setting one set off passes around the lake with everyone applauding (or in tonights case ringing cow bells?) after each set. My dad won't spend the money on fireworks but for 4 years now he has put the purchase of outdoor speakers to good use by blasting the Marine Corp Band's Oompapa music (The first -and last- is Stars & Stripes but I couldn't make a guess at the 20 in between. The Lake fills with people trying to get the best view of all of the docks firing off and its an all around good time. Today they started around 9 and at 10:30 are still going strong!
Living behind an air field has come in handy because Grant slept like a log through all of this. Hope you and your families had great days (and as Valentine said, celebrated the fact that we don't drive on the left side of the road) Geoff, we all love you and wish you could have set off some fireworks of your own tonight, but guess thats not such a great idea...
